Simple Linux Customizations for Fedora
Presenter: Mike Phillips
Description: You now have Fedora installed onto you computer. Now what do you do? This seminar will focus on showing beginning Linux users how to customize their desktops, choose software, and download and install software. The following questions will be discussed.
- What is yum, and how do I use it?
- What is a repository?
- Who is root, and how do I become the root user?
- What happens if I can't remember root's password? Which download file type should I choose (.rpm, .repo, .tar, etc.) and which version (i.e. x86_64, i386, 64-bit, 32-bit, etc.) is right for my computer?
- Where should I install new software?
The seminar will conclude with a few demonstrations of downloading and installing software packages, such as Adobe's Acrobat Reader and the OpenOffice.org suite.
