Linux can NOW replace windows desktop
Presenter: David Egan
Description: The desktop is still the 'king'; the killer app still needs an operating system. With the wide acceptance of Java based applications for the desktop and for the web, there is less dependence on the desktop being specifically Windows. And with the growing number of vulnerabilities on the Windows based desktops, the time is ripe for network and desktop administrators to rethink the current paradigm of Windows only.
Linux offers multiple desktops that are just as user friendly and just as rich in applications while maintaining many of the Microsoft desktop standards on the keyboard and mouse. Most of these applications are supported by the distributor of the Linux all for the same price and Linux does not normally need a virus checker as it is immune to Microsoft application viruses.
Linux desktops offer an extremely rich user experience, with a very wide selection of applications that rival any desktop. And if the environment is a business, then even fewer applications are needed.
The Open Source community provides a wealth of desktop applications for any business to discover their benefits and differences.
Not every application is a mirror of the Microsoft product but they are usually more than sufficient for the average business desktop.
This seminar is meant as an eye opener to the options that Linux makes available for the desktop, the GUI interface in general, the rich user experience and the wide variety of applications provided by the Open Source Community.
